On a cold night like today, a Tamil woman named Kavalai was walking past the co-op building across Lansdowne Station. A structure imbued with power bestowed by its past tenants who came from deep roots of resistance and troubled histories. Her cell rings. Kavalai’s gold earrings glitter against the screen. Crackling sounds as she holds the phone closer to only hear a faint whisper. A request to accept charges from a mysterious collect caller. Unbeknownst to her, the static interference summoned the guardian of secrets who rules the dreamworld. Wrongfully cast as a Tamil demon in their homelands, they remain near the convenience store sign for now and grant talismans to those afflicted by surveillance. 

Pauvuṉ, a Tamil word for gold, serves as connecting point between machines and people to envision what an exchange based on our shared material realities looks like using Augmented Reality (AR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). What stories can we tell each other about surveillance based on our respective knowledges of culture using a metal that defines our histories, lives, and worth. In recasting existing mythologies in a new light, Tamil demons are still the guardians of dreams where surveillance ceases because ancient talismans, revived by AI, blind the watchful eyes of cameras and oppressive states. In starting a conversation about what worries people on this street corner, visitors are invited to think about what worries they wish freedom from.

கலைப்படைப்பின் நோக்கம்
இன்றிரவு போன்ற ஒரு குளிர்ந்த இரவில் கவலை என்ற ஒரு தமிழ் பெண்

'லாண்ட்ஸோன் ஸ்டேஷன்' இற்கு எதிரே உள்ள 'கோ-ஆப்' கட்டிடத்தை தாண்டி நடக்கிறாள். கடினமான வரலாறுகளை எதிர்ப்புடன் கடந்து வந்த முந்தைய குத்தகைதாரர்களால் வழங்கப்பட்ட சக்தியுடன் நிறைந்திருக்கும் ஒரு கட்டிடம். அவளுடைய கைப்பேசி ஒலிக்கிறது. கைப்பேசியின் திரை எதிர்க்கே கவலையின் தங்க கம்மல் ஜொலிக்கிறது.

கைப்பேசியை காதின் அருகே கொண்டுபோக பட் பட் என்ற விரிசல் சத்தம் தோன்றுகிறது, மெல்லிய கிசுகிசு மட்டுமே கேட்கிறது. குற்றச்சாட்டுகளை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளச்சொல்லி ஒரு மர்ம அழைப்பாளரிடமிருந்து கோரிக்கை. அவளுக்கு தெரியாமல் அந்த விரிசல் சத்தம் கனவு உலகத்தை ஆளும் ரகசியங்களின் பாதுகாப்பாளரை அழைத்தது. தமிழ் அசுரன் என்று தவறாக தாய்நாட்டிலிருந்து துரத்தப்பட்டதால், இப்போதைக்கு அவர் பலசரக்கு கடையின் அருகே பின்தங்கி கண்காணிப்பின் தீய கண்களால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பலரிடம் தாயத்துக்களை வழங்குகிறார்.

பவுன், என்று தங்கத்தை குறிக்கும் ஒரு தமிழ் வார்த்தை, இயந்திரங்களையும் மனிதர்களையும் இணைக்கும் புள்ளியாக செயல்படும். அதன் வழி நம்மால் 'ஆக்மெண்டட் ரியாலிட்டி (ஏ.ஆர்)' மற்றும் 'ஆர்டிஃபிஷல் இன்டலிஜென்ஸ் (ஏ.ஐ)' இன் பரிமாற்றத்தில் உருவாகும் நமது பொருள் யதார்த்தங்களை கற்பனை செய்ய முடியும். ஒரு உலோகத்தின் அடிப்படை விவரிக்கப்பட்ட நமது வரலாறுகள், வாழ்க்கைகள், மற்றும் மதிப்புகளைபற்றி உரிய அறிவை வைத்து நம்மால் ஒருவருக்கொருவரிடம் என்ன கதைகளை சொல்ல முடியும்?

புராண கதைகளை ஒரு புதிய ஒளியில் காண்பிக்க, கண்காணிப்பிடமிருந்து சரணாலயம் வழங்கும்படி கனவுக்காட்சிகள் தோன்றும். 'ஏ.ஜ' இனால் மீட்கப்பட்ட பண்டைய தாயத்துகள் கேமராக்களின் மற்றும் ஒடுக்கும் அதிகாரிகளின் உற்றுப்பார்க்கும் பார்வைகளை குருடாக்கும்.

தன் வாழ்க்கையில் எந்த பாதுகாப்புகள் வேண்டும் என்று யோசிக்க பார்வையாளர் அழைக்கப்படுகிறார். ஜனவரியில் இந்த கண்காட்சியின் பகுதியாக தனிப்பயன் தாயத்துகளை செய்யும் ஒரு வர்க்ஷாப் நடத்த படும்.

Vasuki Shanmuganathan is an artist, curator, and researcher. Her art and curatorial practice engages with archives of the mundane and symbiotic forms of connections using material and immaterial means to trace the borders of the digital sphere. Recent projects have utilized the digital medium as a means to unsettle temporal and spatial differences in remembrance at home/diaspora. She obtained a PhD from the University of Toronto and a MPhil from the University of Birmingham (UK).

கலைஞர் அறிமுகம்
வாசுகி சண்முகநாதன் ஒரு கலைஞர், ஆராய்ச்சியாளர், மற்றும் கல்வியாளர் ஆவார். அவரது வளரும் கலை மற்றும் க்யூரடோரியல் படைப்புகளின் வழி அவர் இவ்வுலக இணைப்புகளின் மற்றும் கூட்டுவாழ்வு இணைப்புகளின் காப்பகங்களுடன் ஈடுபடுகிறார். அதன் மூலம் அவர் டிஜிட்டல் உலகின் பொருள் எல்லைகளையும் பொருளற்ற எல்லைகளையும் கண்டுபிடிக்கிறார். அவர் 'தீ பப்ளிக் கேலரி', 'ஸ்கார்போரோ ஆர்ட்ஸ்', 'மேக் ரூம்', மற்றும் 'லேக்ஷோர் ஆர்ட்ஸ்' போன்ற அமைப்புகளுக்கு குழு கண்காட்சிகளை க்யூரேட் செய்துள்ளார். 2022இல் அவர் ஒட்டாவாவில் 'ஏ.ஆர் நாட் ஆர்டிஸ்ட் ரெசிடென்ஸி' இற்காக 'கார்டினர் எக்ஸ்பிரெஸ்வே' சுரங்கப்பாதையில் ஒரு தொடர் படைப்பை நிறுவினார். அவருடைய சமீபத்திய எழுத்துகளை 'எஸ்.டீ.யூ.கே' மற்றும் 'ஃபெம் ஆர்ட் ரிவ்யூ' இல் காணலாம். 2016இல் வாசுகி 'டாப்' (எ) 'தமிழ் ஆர்கைவ் ப்ராஜெக்ட்' என்ற கலைஞர்களின் கூட்டமைப்பை நிறுவினார். 'டாப்' கலையுடன் காப்பக மற்றும் அறிவு பகிர்வு நடைமுறைகளை இணைத்து சமூகம் அணுகக்கூடிய நிகழ்வுகளை ஏற்பாடு செய்யும் ஒரு அமைப்பு.
